Nadab and Abihu were the sons of Aaron. They were chosen along with their father to be priests. But these two dishonored God by offering "profane fire" to Him which He had not commanded them, so the Lord killed them.
To us it may seem like perhaps Nadab and Abihu were trying to do a good thing and that God was too harsh, but being in the presence of the Almighty God and being given priestly responsibilities is not something that should be taken lightly.
For us in our day, I think we lack this level of reverence that God demanded of the Israelites. We like to focus on God being loving and caring and forgiving, and we forget that sinning against our holy God makes us deserving of His wrath. I think it just makes it more amazing to realize that this holy, awesome God chose to spare us from His wrath - instead pouring it out on His Son in our stead - so that one day we can actually physically behold Him in all of His glory and power, now able to approach this holy God because of the intercession of His Son, Jesus Christ.
