Ballooooons. iiinnnn. SPAAAAAACE!!!!!

Space:
Using any materials, create a situation in which the viewer is very aware that something has been presented in an unaccustomed scale, much larger or much smaller than is usual reality.


Here's a little write-up I did for a girl writing an article on my class:

There’s this delightful tension to my project in that balloons create a party atmosphere of festivity and fun, but they are placed in the library which is an atmosphere of studious silence and tranquility. It’s very psychological in affecting the space because the viewer tries to figure out the connection between these two unassociated things. Most people have a positive response to the piece because balloons in general tend to make people happy, and it livens up the space, making the atmosphere for studying more enjoyable. However, there is also a negative reaction due to the fragility of balloons that causes a tension that at any second they could pop.

This is only the second project I’ve created in the 3D class this semester, but it has already drastically shaped my thinking as an artist, not only in learning and understanding how to work with a 3 dimensional form but also in recognizing the commitment it takes to be an artist. When working in 3 dimensions there’s a lot to consider, because it’s relatively easy to come up with huge ideas but not always possible to accomplish them. Mr. Benson has been so essential to my understanding of 3 dimensional design because not only does he teach it, but he lives it. He told us how to be creative is to look at lots of art, talk to other artists, and most importantly talk to God and be committed to our relationship with Him. When you’re committed to God, you’ll be committed to the plan He has for your life, and for me that’s art. The most important thing I’m learning through this class is how to love God through art, and I’m so grateful for the amazing examples we have in Mr. Benson and all the art professors here who are living it out and taking the time to encourage us to do the same.

I installed the balloons last Thursday, and normally the project would've had to come down that night, but Mr. Benson like my project so it got to stay up. That weekend and the beginning of this week we had the National Accreditation people coming to our school to evaluate our art department and give us a peer review. It got to stay up for that, and we also put a bunch of other artwork in the halls, which was super fun to see the walls brightened up. Yesterday was a week since I had my balloons up, though, and they were looking a little sad, so I had to take them down. :/ The library is dull and bland once again...
